temperatures going to soar into the afternoon. starting off october in the hot side. mild around the bay area. the skies are clear . just a little hazy. 65 degrees. 63 in san ra fael. 62 in san jose. high pressure building strong . a weak off shore wind and the ridge starts to breakdown. today is going to be the hottest day of the week. these temperatures are going to soar by the afternoon. 93 in san jose. east bay that's where we're going to see the hottest temperatures. 103 in pleasant ton. inside the bay, the temperatures running into the 80s. none of these record breakers but still hot enough. next couple days changes. slow cooling tomorrow. drastic cooling by wednesday and thursday. next weekend, back to normal, partly cloudy, maxing
out in the low 80s. >> thank you. and let's go out towards san francisco. as he mentioned, it is spare the air day. use mass transit. if you are driving , you may find some traffic tie ups around the south and market area. about the middle of this week, howard street is shut down between 3rd and 4th. it's been causing a real mess. elsewhere, a quick look outside. 880 to loek and looks to oakland looks okay. that's a check of your traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. developing news from the san mateo county coast guard. search for two people who were thrown into the water. they were aboard a fishing boat that capsized. more searchers will be in the area after the
sun comes up. it was before dawn yesterday when the 23 foot fishing boat headed out. it was 10:30 when the boat got hit. >> they were hit by a wave that caught them by surprised. knocked all four subjects into the water. once they were in the water, they started getting pounded by additional waves and two actually made it to shore. and two are still outstanding. >> the coast guard used aircraft and boats to search for the two who are missing. the two who made it to shore were wearing life jackets. >> it is 4:32 now. police want some help in solving a freeway shooting southbound highway 101 closed at the holley street exist after the victim's car crashed along the off ramp there. red dodge charger that had been riddled with bullets. at least one of them hit by the
gunfire. it may have been near highway 92. also not clear whether any shots were fired from that charger that did crash. a san jose brawl left one man dead from a stabbing. dozens of people were fighting about 1:00 sunday morning. it was san jose's 34th murder of the year. 8 people died over an 11 day stretch back in august. >> this morning a trial gets underway for a woman accused of killing a nursing student. in a dispute over a boyfriend. lei disappeared in may of last year. her body was found four months later. tomorrow, the suspect in a mass shooting in oakland will be back in court. appear in a pretrial hearing. accused of
killing 7 people back in april. he has pleaded not guilty. if convicted he could get the death penalty. >> san francisco shoppers, bring your own bags today or going to cost you a little. a city wide ordinance banning the use of plastic bags will go into affect. affects only large super markets and pharmacies. if you don't have a bag, you'll be charged 10 cents for every bag you need. >> i think we should pay for the damage out there. and if we can just have that two second thought of saying i've got a bag i can reuse, that's great. >> every year more than 1 million plastic bags are pulled out of the waterways. other bay area headlines we're following, four cities in the bay area have high sales tax today. encreased by one-half of -- increased by one-half of 1%.
now at 8.75%. the sales tax in sonoma is up to 8.5%. all the increases were passed by the voters. more trains are being added to meet demand there. caltran will revive four discontinued trains. riders hit a new high in the month of june. no legislative release for 200,000 workers. jerry brown has vetoed legislation that would have provided other labor protections to 200,000 care givers, nannies in california. he rejected it because he believes the bill raises the number of unanswered questions. california is the first state to ban a controversial therapy aimed at making a gay minor
straight. bans nonscientific therapies that have driven people to depression and suicide. opponents argued the ban infringes on the right. >> gay rights activists are expected to protest the new archbishop. takeover the position on thursday. he was a key force behind profit 8. he'll be welcomed at most holy redeemer catholic church in the castro district. >> hopefully elsie how important this church is and what it does. there are a lost elements which unfortunately hold that position. and a place like this kind of challenges that on its own level >> in august, the bishop was arrested in san diego and charged with drunk driving. he later apologized. >> turning to campaign 2012
now, a new poll shows president obama in the lead. mr. obama with 51% support compared to 44% for mitt romney. the president is now in one of those states nevada as he prepared for the first debate. susan has more on the debate preps. >> reporter: more than 11,000 people packed a high school in las vegas sunday night to listen to president obama. >> we'll win this election again. >> reporter: it was the last scheduled appearance before the first presidential debate on wednesday. >> governor romney is a good debater. i'm just okay. >> romney fit in another rehearsal after church in boston on sunday. he's been practicing since june. paul ryan says this will not be a defining moment. >> i don't think one event is going to make or break this campaign. >> but apparently not everyone got the memo. >> for thursday morning you are
all going to be scratching your heads and saying wow we have a barn burner. >> wednesday's debate will center on domestic issues including the economy. romney is focused on foreign policy and slamming the president over his handling of the events in the middle east. romney said the president has shown weakness in the middle east. heightened the prospect of conflict and instability. can provoke aggression and encourage disorder. the president is looking forward to debating foreign policy with mitt romney. >> this president promised a few things. he'd end the iraq war. he did. >> said to be planning a major foreign policy speech to deliver in the next few weeks. cbs news washington. >> foreign policy will be the focus of the third and final

toward the coastline. this is probably the day to go to the beach. this will be the peak of the heat as this ridge sits overhead. it is spare the air day. fairly cool. today we'll see the heat and changes into tomorrow. sfo, clear start. should be a great day to fly out. or anybody coming in, looking good. about 81 in houston. 66 in chicago. around the bay area , how about these temperatures. something else by the afternoon. probably not record breaking but hot enough. 93 in san jose. 78 in pacific a. 102 in liver more. 100 in fairfield. 94. 86 in oakland.
86 in san francisco. and 95 in santa rosa. next couple days, temperatures begin to cool. we may start to see low clouds and fog come tuesday and more extensive cooling come wednesday and thursday. and by next weekend, that heat wave going to be a distant memory. let's check on the roadways with elizabeth. >> thanks. we're going to go outside. not too many problems. got to get to work on this back to work monday morning. toward the bay bridge toll plaza heading into the city right now. let's go to our maps. still some areas still in lanes. eastbound lanes of highway 4 approaching baily road. you may find lanes blocked. that's scheduled to 1:00 this afternoon. just a heads up. westbound, no major problems right now through antioch. elsewhere, 880 through oakland,
pretty quiet commute so far. you will find road work in lanes past fruit bail. scheduled until 5:00 this morning. the golden gate bridge looking good. haven't seen any lane change trucks yet. may have passed by when we weren't sneaking a peak. no major issues. westbound 580 drive is is break light free so far. it is the spare the air day, you are encouraged to stay off the roads. use mass transit. and so far everything is on time. that's a check of your time saver traffic. traffic and weather together every ten minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. checking your world. taliban is claiming responsibility for the latest killings in afghanistan. at least 14 people were killed this morning when a motorcycle loaded
with explosives ran into a patrol of afghan and international forces. an afghan official, three americans and translator are among the dead. killed in an inside era tack over the weekend. a wave of violence killed 34 people this weekend in iraq. 25 came in car bombings and shootings in the baghdad area. a suicide car bomber killed five policeman at a checkpoint. the attacks are seen as a display of force. >> 4:47. we're following breaking news of la. it's a car chase even at this hour. started about 420. they are on highway 101. the driver has been going at least 100 miles per hour off and on. he gets off the freeway and back on. they are keeping an eye on this guy. the guy is wanted for felony evading of an officer.
we'll keep you updated. along 101 right now in southern california. former california governor arnold schwarzenegger's book hits shelves today. including a number of affairs including the one with his made that resulted in a son. in his interview with cbs's 60 minutes, here's andrew spencer with more. >> arnold schwarzenegger admits in his book and 60 minutes, he had an affair with his co star. happened while he was in a relationship with maria who later became his wife. >> was that the only affair? >> no. but, that's something that's obviously between maria and me. >> she know? >> yeah. >> so it's a recurring issue with you? >> i'm not perfect.

construction spending, manufacturing and auto sales. on friday, the government releases the employment report for the month of september. show the economy added just 96,000 jobs in august. the job less rate fell slightly as people gave up looking for work. people who preordered amazon's newest and brighten kindle will have to wait. supposed to ship tomorrow but ship the week of october the 22nd. starts at $119. >> a warning on kids exposure to television even when they are not watching it. a study in the journal pediatrics, the tv is on in the background four hours a day. previous research has found kids exposed to background television don't do well on tests. this is true for children under the age of 2. so even the background. >> your kids don't want tv do they? >> not a lot. they do watch
